Amazon Monkey Frog

Monkey Frog (Phyllomedusa sauvagii)

Other Names: Waxy monkey leaf frog, painted belly leaf frog.

Where Found: These frogs are found in the rain forests of Northern South America.

Breeding:  These frogs rarely ever spend time on the ground. They have developed an amazing strategy for laying eggs in the trees. The eggs are laid on a leaf, the leaves are then folded up into a packet keeping them moist and safe. Once the eggs hatch, the tadpoles fall into the water below the trees.

Habits: These frogs are referred to as monkey’s because they usually walk instead of hop resembling the way a monkey would move through the trees. They are a slow moving species spending most of their days basking in the sun, while feeding at night on various spiders and insects.

Painted belly leaf frog.

Also known as the waxy monkey, or painted belly leaf frog. As you can clearly see, this specimen looks a lot like a leaf. It uses this to its advantage when it ambushes prey.
